Buddy Bugs

Buddy bugs is a project based on my love for insects. As a little girl I was completely fascinated by them.

I have always noticed that people around me found them frightening and would rather see them dead. Both in the past and now I thought this is a shame because I view them as sweet, funny, and clumsy creatures.

Insects are a crucial link in the food chain, they take care of the plants, but they are also a source of food for many species. After plentiful research I found out that the numbers of insect species going instinct is enormous. And since insects are small and people find them disgusting, I wanted to put them in a positive light with this project.

By visibly humanizing them, I hoped to regain a certain appreciation for these animals. I choose certain characters based on my own appreciation of insects. Some I made cute or elegant, others I humanized in the shape as they are useful to humans, and in a way that their daily insect activities are seen as human activity.

In the last image you can see how small they are. The largest was about the size of a regular paper clip.

Everything is handmade under a magnifying glass.

The insects that are used in this project are real, I received the insects from Belgium. The animals were already dead before I got them but in a way they were brought back to life. They were previously used for biology.
